A few months ago my team and I had the pleasure of working with Tiana Simpson. Tiana is the amazing photographer behind the images that tell Lindsay and Ryan’s love story. Lindsay and Ryan tied the knot at one of my personal favorite venues, The National Museum of Women in the Arts. Their wedding day was intimate, immaculate and filled with pure love.
I recently got the chance to pick Tiana’s brain and ask her a few questions:
What makes you and your work unique?
I have the ability to work in both a photojournalistic style as well as a traditional/artistic style. I have learned to perfectly blend these two styles to create a style of shooting that really compliments my vision. This allows me to capture moments as they are happening, in the action. I also love to work with the bridal party and the couple to get some really fun and unique portraits of them. This combination allows me to get really beautiful and artistic portraits as well as capture the story of each bride’s wedding day as it unfolds.
How do you exceed your client’s expectations?
I am lucky that I get to shoot weddings. I get to be around brides and grooms and families who show up looking absolutely stunning. These families take me into their circle to share these happy moments with them. It is the emotions of the day, the tears of the parents first seeing their daughter in the dress, the grooms reaction as the bride walks down the aisle. The embrace after walking down the aisle after being married and the groom steals a kiss on the bride’s cheek and whispers a secret in her ear when they think no one is watching. Those are the moments I like to include for my clients. I like to give them images that capture their love, their emotion during their wedding celebration.
What is your favorite time of year to shoot?
I love to shoot all year round! Each season has a little something different to offer.
At what local venues or landmarks do you most enjoy working?
I shoot a lot engagements and wedding portraits at the Jefferson Memorial and the Tidal Basin. I love the variety and “DC” feel that that area offers. As far as venues, I love shooting at new venues as it boosts my creativity and offers me the chance to create new and unique pictures for every couple I photograph.
What’s one of your favorite photography trends?
I don’t think it is a trend, but I do love the opportunity to shoot more details at weddings. Brides go through so much time and put a lot of thought into the details that really tie their wedding together. I love to shoot the details that are great reminders of the overall wedding day.
What do you wish all brides knew about your job or the wedding photography industry?
Make an investment in a photographer who you trust to get the shoots on your wedding day. These are not just photographs, but they are memories, emotions, and moments that you will look back on and remember this very happy time in your life. Your children and grandchildren will look back at your wedding pictures for a little glimpse of you and your life. Make the investment to get a photographer who can capture those precious memories and make sure you have time built into your timeline to get the kind of images you want.
Do you have wedding savings tips and advice for our brides on a budget?
Weddings are all about celebrating a new step in your life and the creation of a new family. The most important part of the day is that you are celebrating with your family and close friends – make the most of those relationships. Focus on what is most important to you and really enjoy your day!
