One of my dear friends gifted me a tote and iPad cover for my birthday last year. When I inquired about the designer of the tote, I was amazed to learn that the items were custom made just for me! My friend Fatimah and her sister Naima are the duo behind Fearless Threads. Since my birthday, I have partnered with Fearless Threads on gifts for my brides, friends and family. Tell us more about Fearless Threads:
We are the eclectic brand, known as Fearless Threads, based in Washington, DC. For the past two years Fearless Threads has been delighted to provide customers with a variety of distinctive, handmade handbags and accessories. Our merchandise includes purses, totes, wristlets, iPad/Kindle covers, belts, scarves and brooches. I (Naima) design and create the product line, while working closely with my sister (Fatimah) who is the master of sales and marketing. Our clients love us because we work with them to create one-of-a-kind pieces that fit their personality and style. We can transform a customer’s vision into a vibrant creation that they will cherish and want to show off!
What inspired you to start your company?
A few years ago, a friend brought back yards of gorgeous fabric from her trip to Ghana, and she couldn’t decide what to do with it. I gladly took on the challenge of creating something wonderful for her. The fabric was so rich and beautiful that it actually inspired me! I made a couple of tote bags for her and the requests from other friends and family started pouring in. I thought it would just be a hobby but low-and-behold, Fearless Threads was born.
What makes your items unique?
I pour every ounce of passion into my creations. I fell in love with sewing at a very young age. I took my first formal sewing class in the 7th grade, but for as long as I can remember, I was cutting up my clothes and putting them back together in funky ways. I never lost that love and passion for creating things. The great thing about our business is that we allow the customer to be a part of the process of developing their products. It helps fuel their passion and creativity, and it allows them to purchase something that they helped design. Our customers are like part of the extended “fearless” family!
What is your creation process when working with a new client?
We always like to first understand the clients’ needs. Are they looking for something to carry everyday to work? A signature item? A gift for someone else? After we get a feel for their basic needs, we take it to the next level! We show clients how to mix and match colors and patterns, while infusing their personal style and showing off their alter egos. All of our clients have given us positive feedback on their Fearless Threads experience. We have small items such as cosmetic pouches and brooches that start at $8, and our larger items such as diaper bags and travel bags are around $65.
What is the most popular item that you sell?
Our clutch purses are very popular. The Patsy and Cleopatra are our bestsellers. They are essential for girls’ night out, brunch, date night, or any fun occasion. Clients also love the Josephine tote. They can use it everyday for work, errands, and shopping. The best part is it can be reversible!
What is your personal favorite item?
I absolutely love everything I create, but my fall favorites are the Savannah and Mackenzie totes. Both are completely versatile; a super cute way to hold all of my junk. I actually used the Savannah as my carryon bag for a trip this summer. The flight attendant loved it so much that she ordered one at 35,000 feet. I guess Fearless Threads is a member of the mile-high club now!
What excites you most about the work that you do?
I’m so excited about the endless possibilities! There is so much we can do with our products and the business. Connecting with clients and incorporating their feedback is invaluable to making Fearless Threads better. It’s also been amazing to network and collaborate with fellow crafters and up-and-coming businesses.
We had a great time working with Geomyra Lewis Weddings and Events (GLWE) to create a signature tote for your lovely brides. Having our customers involved in the creative process helps fuel their energy as well as ours.
How do you exceed your clients’ expectations?
We are extraordinarily detail-oriented. Clients are always surprised by the little tweaks and finishing touches that we add to their products. It could be the fabric we use for the lining or a fancy button; maybe we give them a complimentary gift or wrap the items in special packaging. We go the extra mile to personalize our products in some way.
What has been a highlight or milestone in your (or your companies’) career?
We weren’t always known as Fearless Threads. This year we decided to rebrand, and it’s been amazing! We have taken a more cohesive approach, and it has greatly increased our presence. Our Open House was our largest and most successful event to-date. We’re planning more open houses for the fall and winter seasons.
What is next for your company?
We’ve started hosting intimate showcases for our clients. Similar to those jewelry or cutlery parties we’ve all been to, we bring our collection to our clients and their friends. This is a fun way for us to connect with our existing and potential clients. We often use these showcases to test out new products and ideas. We’re working on adding items for men and children to our line. In the near future we’d like to include more bridal products. We’ve already created a “something blue” bridal bag that my sister carried on her wedding day.
We always love giving back to our community. We’ve held raffles to raise money for various charities, and we’ve donated items for silent auction and other fundraisers. We recently designed an apron in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month that was entered into the DC State Fair’s sewing competition.
We would absolutely love to open a studio soon. Our clients can stop by and browse our selection of fabrics and styles and customize something that is a reflection of them. Lately, we have received many requests for sewing and craft lessons. We would use the studio to teach beginning classes and host events. In addition, we’re looking forward to creating more signature products, just as we did with GLWE. It would also be utterly awesome to do something cool like design the gift bag for the Grammys!
